Kundalini yoga was introduced to the western world by Yogi Bhajan who brought it to California in 1969 and taught it openly in order to prepare humanity for major changes happening on the planet… up until then it was kept very secret. The beauty of this yoga is that it incorporates all aspects – from mantra (chanting), meditation, asana (postures), mudras (hand positions) & pranayama (breathing techniques) – you see all of these in a class.
All these different aspects are included in order to hone you back into the source of who you are. Kundalini yoga is not terribly focused on postures, rather its actually showing you the energy that comes from the postures that you do…. its coming more from an energetic perspective than a visual external shape. Its a very powerful yoga which really taps into many different levels of you & it gives you the tools to help you to be able to process things.
The term Kundalini itself refers to a coil of energy at the base of the spine which is looking to become activated upwards through the sushumna nadi, the central channel of the spine, coming out through the crown chakra. The Kundalini practice also works a lot on the chakras by using different kriyas – vigorous asana sequences. Kriya means action, which is raja yoga – through this we shift energy, we shift blockages & we transcend and move back to our natural state of pure essence.
Kundalini yoga takes you to another level – it will enhance and grow all your other practices. It’s challenging.. but we will start softly and then gradually build it as we go along. It’s powerful because you create a much better understanding of the energy & source of who you are.
