This year for me was all about developing and deepening my own practice and finding something to train in that would really inspire me. As ever be careful what you ask for in life. The universe presented kundalini yoga and OMG it was just what I’d been looking for!! Yoga is a science as such, but Kundalini Yoga takes it to another level. As my teaching has developed it has drawn me more towards breath, awareness and turning my attention more inward than out! To look beyond the shapes and explore more the inner landscape that exists within me. And to learn and understand the more deeper aspects of this amazing science and technology. Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is called the Yoga of Awareness. It is a dynamic, powerful tool that is designed to give you an experience of your soul. Like a fast track! In Kundalini Yoga we harness the mental, physical, and nervous energies of the body and put them under the domain of the will, which is the instrument of the soul. This technology precisely and consciously combines breath, mudra, drishti mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purifiy the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind, and soul.

The word kriya means action. In Kundalini Yoga a kriya is a series of postures, breath, and sound that work toward a specific outcome. Practicing a kriya initiates a sequence of physical and mental changes that affect the body, mind, and spirit simultaneously. There are kriyas that support the liver, balance the glandular system, make you radiant, stimulate the pituitary, increase the flexibility of the spine, and many more. Each kriya has a different effect, but all work on all levels of your being.

Practicing Kundalini Yoga kriyas is one of the best ways to prepare yourself for a healthy, happy life. Using the angles and triangles of the asanas, fueled by the prana of the breath, re-tuned by the repetition of mantra, and concentrated by eye-focus and body locks, you are physically different by the end of the kriya. These changes assist the physical and mental preparation of a meditative internal space. This framework for meditation occurs in numerous ways: opening the joints to facilitate sitting, altering the chemical constituents of the blood via glandular stimulation, and redirecting the mind through concentration and focus.

Kundalini Yoga was kept very secret until 1969 when Yogi Bhajan taught it openly. He met a number of young hippies, the spiritual seekers of that era, and immediately recognized that the experience of higher consciousness they were attempting to find through drugs, could be achieved by practicing the Science of Kundalini Yoga, while simultaneously rebuilding their nervous systems.

Breaking the centuries old tradition of secrecy surrounding the empowering science of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan began teaching it publicly. With the yogic sciences of yoga, meditation, yogic philosophy, and loving acceptance, he gave the soon to be called “Baby Boomers” an effective alternative to the prevalent drug culture. He called it the “3HO” (healthy, happy, holy) way of life.

The legacy of technical and spiritual knowledge that Yogi Bhajan studied and mastered in India is the gift he brought to the West. “In Kundalini Yoga the most important thing is your experience. It goes right to your heart. No words can replace your experience. Your mind may accept the words or it may not, but your consciousness will not accept just words.”  -Yogi Bhajan,
