A beach holiday where you do yoga every day? That’s our kind of holiday…
Every year we hold a retreat at Kovalam Beach, South India for 10 days. There’s something really magical about going to the source of where yoga began and connecting to the culture and tradition of this beautiful country.
We do 2 classes a day outdoors, overlooking the sea and with a rotation of classes such as Vinyasa Flow, Yin, Yangyin and Bikram. There an optional daily half an hour guided meditation before morning class. Raj will also do a workshop style class on one day, which focuses on postural alignment and breathing with Q&A.
This year we have a new venue which is more luxurious, further up on the hill so you have an amazing view looking out over the endless Arabian sea. Rooms are really spacious and there’s pool for lazing around and sunbathing, reading book or going for a quick dip. The beach is a short walk away for chilling, swimming, surfing or going for long walks.
Just 5 minutes away from the hotel is the most amazing and renowned Ayurvedic clinic where Dr Unni will customise a detox plan for you to do during your stay using Ayurvedic herbs and massage.
There’s also organised excursions to an elephant sanctuary, a boat trip to the back waters and a shopping trip to the capital Trivandrum if you want to explore a bit more too.
The food is a huge highlight. In the morning after class there’s brunch which could be local fruitsa and yoghurt, scrambled eggs or more traditional dosas and pooris. Basically any thing goes and you have whatever you like to choose from.
Kovalam is a fishing town and at night you can watch the fishermen leave on their boats and return in the morning with a fresh catch of fish which is sold to the local restaurants. So Raj will take you to some of his favourite restaurants around Kovalam and you will eat the freshest fish and seafood, straight out of the sea!
We also have a good time in the evening… a cocktail by the beach or a few beers. Lets not take it all to seriously ;).
This is a trip to unwind and rejuvenate. To nourish the body as well as the mind and really stimulate the senses. Its also a lot of fun, as you hang out with like minded people and engage with a new culture. You willl come back feeling new.
